Convergence of non-local finite element energies for fracture mechanics

چکیده
Abstract. Usually smeared crack techniques are based on the following features: the fracture is represented by means of a band of finite elements and by a softening constitutive law of damage type. Often these methods are implemented with nonlocal operators which control the localization effects and reduce the mesh bias. We consider a non-local smeared crack energy defined for a finite element space on a structured grid. We characterize the limit energy as the mesh size h tends to zero and we establish a precise link between the discrete and continuum formulations of the fracture energies, showing the correct scaling and the explicit form of the mesh bias.

A novel modification of decouple scaled boundary finite element method in fracture mechanics problems
In fracture mechanics and failure analysis, cracked media energy and consequently stress intensity factors (SIFs) play a crucial and significant role. Based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), the SIFs and energy of cracked media may be estimated. This study presents the novel modification of decoupled scaled boundary finite element method (DSBFEM) to model cracked media. In this metho...
متن کاملFracture Mechanics Analysis of Fourth Lumbar Vertebra in Method of Finite Element Analysis
Objective: In this paper, finite element model of the L4 vertebra subjected to combination of compression and flexion loading in isotropic and anisotropic cases is investigated. Methods: In both cases, the vertebra is considered homogeneous. Also, the body of vertebra is divided to cancellous and cortical sections in anisotropic model, but the process is assumed isotropic such as isotropic mode...

متن کاملDamage Assessment using an Inverse Fracture Mechanics approach
This paper studies the application of an inverse methodology for problem solving in fracture mechanics using the finite element analysis. The method was applied to both detection of subsurface cracks and the study of propagating cracks. The procedure for detection of subsurface cracks uses a first order optimization analysis coupled with a penalty function to solve for the unknown geometric par...
متن کاملFinite Element Modeling of Crack Initiation Angle Under Mixed Mode (I/II) Fracture
Present study deals with the prediction of crack initiation angle for mixed mode (I/II) fracture using finite element techniques and J-Integral based approach. The FE code ANSYS is used to estimate the stress intensity factor numerically. The estimated values of SIF were incorporated into six different crack initiation angle criteria to predict the crack initiation angle. Single edge crack spec...
